Thus all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the Lord with shouting, and with sound of the horn, with trumpets, with loud-sounding cymbals, with harps and lyres. -1 Chronicles 15:28
Imagine all of the
people that King David appointed in a parade, carrying the ark with loud
cymbals. The singing and joyful noise reaches all of those around. King
David was so joyful that he danced. The
Bible describes him leaping and celebrating. People know that he is praising God.
Imagine this: we get the opportunity to do the very same thing, carrying the Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ rather than the Ark.
While reading 1 Chronicles 15, I got the chance to see how King David spoke to Chief of the Levites. They appointed singers with instruments of music: harps, lyres and loud-sounding cymbals to raise the sounds of joy. Although King David could have made music for himself that was bumping loud, he chose to use the royal procession to bring glory to God.
This chapter is truly mind-blowing. It presents the question to the church: WHAT is our purpose in using our music talents? It’s simple: Jesus.
Our purpose is to proclaim Christ. We are to do so even with our gifts and talents. This particular church body has been blessed with a tremendous amount of brothers and sisters with solid talent. Jesus has given those talents. We are to use them for His glory. He certainly does not need us for His mission, but He chooses us and allows us to be a part of His mission.
Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. -Philippians 2:9-11
The body of Christ does an excellent job confessing and glorifying Jesus, but it’s good to be reminded that everything is all about Jesus. While we are praising Him with music, we should continually reflect WHY. When we make music, when we promote music, we need to know WHY. Why should we worship Him with music?
Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! -Psalm 150:6
God desires to have worshipers praise him. We have an opportunity to use the gifts and talents the Lord has given us to bring Him glory.
